Camping

Off to the annual CHP Retreat this weekend. We were determined to go since we missed last year, but with so much last-minute wedding preparation going on, it’s beginning to look less like a fantastic idea. Or rather more like a good idea with a high cost.

Still, the eve of such a trip is a perfect time to review quotes from campouts past.

I mean, who could forget such gems as “Hold it there, Tyler, we’re going to take a picture of your… pickle” and “She’s like a little snowman… from hell!” And of course, “We can’t have scones running around unzipped, can we?”

I wonder if anyone collected quotes on last year’s trip?

  1. You know… I’ve only been on one of those. 1999.

Maybe next year. Even if I’d been on the ball and knowed about it beforehand…

Well, Dan must attend Sabbat because a good friend of his hasn’t seen him in three weeks, and he had that bizarre medical thing that’s turned out to be nothing except costing him his truck-driving job (and forcing him to return to school)…

So, yeah. Not going. Again. Where is it this year?

Yow! I was going to ask if he’d found out what caused it, but then I popped over to his journal and saw the update. A friend of mine had the same problems with the DMV, though in his case it was an actual seizure and could be traced directly to a change in medication dosage. It was his first “event” in years, it had a single, easily-prevented cause, and it still took several months to get his license back. At the time, I got the impression that the delays were at least partly due to a paperwork snafu early on. I didn’t realize it was a standard three-month waiting period.

      Where is it this year?

Joshua Tree. They seem to go back every 3-4 years.

Off the top of my head:

1996: Cuyamaca? (I was on the trip, but I’m not 100% sure that’s where we went)
1997: Joshua Tree (I wasn’t there, but Katie was)
      1998: Anza-Borrego at a campsite
      1999: Anza-Borrego middle-o-nowhere
      2000: Angeles National Forest
      2001: Joshua Tree
2002: Cuyamaca (I wonder if the campground is still there.)
      2003: ????
      2004: Joshua Tree

      1. Well, it probably depends on the cause, etc. — there may have been complications stemming from the fact that (in part) it was a dosage issue, and the verification that the new dosage didn’t cause the same result…

With Dan, there’s nothing overt or subclinical, though he might have been having a migraine aura (that’s the doc’s opinion on the headaches he’s been having for a month and a half — CT was clear), which means he and I could possibly start comparison shopping on migraine treatments. *laugh*

But, yeah… His doc signed for the minimum suspension; it’s up to the state now. But if the expert says, “Hey, one-time thing… Can’t find any standard cause…” it’s an idiosyncrasy, and they have no cause to permanently pull his regular license.

As for 1999, that wasn’t “middle-o-nowhere”… that was Palm Arroyo, thankyouverymuch. ;P

      2. 1997: Joshua Tree (I wasn’t there, but Katie was)

Joshua Tree–next to the commet worshiping cultists. YAY! It’s all about the memories…

Speaking as a former (recovering ?) PAA, there are only so many places close that Roger wants to go to. In fact, if it were up to Dr. McWilliams, we’d be at Anza Borrego every time.

Angeles was fun. I wish they would try Catalina sometime.

          1. They were just a bit of a way down from us. They told Roger they were there to “experience the power of the commet.”

            Roger just kept on talking.
