  1. Sheer moment of geekness here, but if you really want to appreciate UHF, you need to see the Treasure of Sierra Madre.

    Is Metropolis worth seeing?

    1. Ah, but who doesn’t already know the “Badges?!?” line? (Or is there more?)

And yes, Metropolis is worth seeing. I have it on DVD, although of course the picture quality stinks. I vaguely recall something about a restoration project, though, so there may be a newer, clearer release.

Even if you’re not interested in the story, it’s worth seeing for the scenic design (and to a lesser extent the costume design). The movie has influenced a lot of later films, and you’ll be recognizing bits of things ranging from from Blade Runner to Madonna videos.

        Who needs more than badgers?

And I like the delivery in Sierra Madre. While Sierra’s one of Bogey’s better performances, Alfonso Bedoya steals the scene with that line.

Ooo. Can I borrow it? I can live with picture quality being bad. My copy of The Third Man is rickety at best. I think it went straight from vault to VHS without so much as a dustcloth.

I’ve seen clips from Metropolis for various classes (usually to seque into Blade Runner), but never the movie itself. I’m not sure you were allowed to graduate English at UCI in 2000 without having seen Blade Runner 3 times. =)

          1. Minda or maldis and I ended up hitting the Blade Runner jackpot. Rowe, Hollowell, and maybe Hcore? My memory’s fading, but I knew a someone who shared Hcore that used the same paper on multiculturalism in noir for all three (with slight modifications.)

          2. I think I also only watched it with Rowe, but I took four different classes with Rowe and I’m pretty sure he showed it in at least two of them.

            BTW, do I know katyakoshka?

          3. Regan… English major…. CHP… ’94-’00 (I took a really, really long time). Did multi-major in English, drama & Russian for a while there. PAA ’98-’99 in Humanities.

Only took the one course in fall of ’97 with Rowe (Postmodernism/Multiculturalism). I took 3 with Kroll, 2 with Georgianna, and a total of 10 lit classes in ECL focusing on literature up to & including Austen.

          4. Then we do know each other.

Daniel… English major…. CHP… ’96-’01. The obnoxious overzealous quondam libertarian. Lived in 1002 my first three years. Not very active in the CHP. I think we might have taken the same Shakespeare class with James Olney?

          5. Yep. We do (know each other) and did (take the same class).

I wasn’t all that active in CHP, especially after the first couple of years. Lived in 1002 in ’95… 1006 ’95-’97.

Man, now I’ve found six verified fellow CHP grads on here… *laugh*

          6. Pretty decent. Living in the SD area… went gothy, if you can’t tell. *laugh*

I’ve been working at the same place since I finished classes at UCI (publishing company in north SD county); need to get to work on getting into a M.Ed. program in post-secondary academic counseling at UCLA for the ’05-’06 school year.

Otherwise, dating someone for 3.5 months now, making ends meet, have cats, done mostly domestic travel, found out I’m a dual citizen by birth (Canadian). Heh.

          7. I’m pretty sure you know Daniel. He was my year, in English, but I can’t think of any classes the three of us took together…

          8. Well, we’ve ascertained that we both took Shakespeare from Olney in winter ’99. I do remember him from various social-academic gatherings here and there, as well.

I was 90% sure that the journal was Daniel’s… but it’s better to be certain. ;P

          9. I had the same thing happen with Heart of Darkness. I read it for fun while in high school, then read it again my senior year, then read it again for one of the first-year English classes (back when I was an English major), then read it again for Short Story Writing.

As for Blade Runner, which version did they show? The original (with the inner-monologue narration and the off-into-the-sunset ending) or the director’s cut?

          10. I was raised on the original, but in school we saw the director’s cut, deleted unicorn dream sequence and all.

The director’s cut is the superior story, but I do miss the inner-monologue for nostalgia’s sake.
